The Astrient Foundation is a nonprofit organization established to support the dissemination of technical knowledge and expertise in developing or economically disadvantage communities, produce software applications which address concrete issues facing developing or economically disadvantaged communities, and aid students who demonstrate acumen or potential in areas of social responsibility and entrepreneurship.
Biography
The Astrient Foundation was founded in 2007 by Rashid Mayes and Karlyn Hunter. Rashid and Karlyn, sharing an interest in social entrepreneurship, decided to create the Astrient Foundation to promote social change through knowledge dissemination.
As the couple refined their vision, they saw an opportunity to leverage the social web as a mechanism for organizing, administering, and enhancing the process of social entrepreneurship. In August of 2007, Rashid began enhancing CliqCafe.com to include tools to support the Foundation’s mission.
In September of 2007, Rashid and Karlyn released the initial version of the Astrient Foundation website complete with tools for prospective applicants to apply for services and for the Foundation to evaluate, discuss, and communicate with applicants.
Using the benefits of the social internet, the Foundation's model of social activism is participatory and leverages the talents of its members regardless of locale.
